Overview
The early history of the Local Government system setup in Sungai Petani began in the 50’s, when the Local Council Ordinance 1952 was approved and adopted. Then, in year 1953, the Sungai Petani Town Board for Sungai Petani town administration was established.On 1 August 1975, the Kuala Muda Local Government District Council (MDKT.KM) was established encompassing Sungai Lalang, Jeniang, Merbok, Bukit Selambau, Bedong and Gurun areas.On 1 February 1978, the Kuala Muda District Council (MDKM) was established to replace MDKT.KM.Sungai Petani once again was upgraded to Municipal Council on 2 July 1994 equivalent to 22 Muharram 1415H.With this upgrade, Sungai Petani Municipal Council (MPSPK) is fully responsible on the development control, licensing, planning, providing infrastructure facilities and many more to ensure of the town development and wellbeing of residents in Sungai Petani town specifically and Kuala Muda generally.
